Easy For Me

Writing poetry is easy for me When my pen hits the page, my mind can engage, I’m free from my cage, my life is arranged Writing poetry is easy for me The words they all flow, my brain can let go, I always know Exactly what to say next Before it’s even written Writing sentences like a scribe, and you know each word be hittin’ Writing poetry is easy for me I write and i think and in turn i ink I blink and it’s there, a poem out of midair I relax into my chair Writing poetry is easy for me And then they say “write an essay” And my mind disintegrates into the fray The second the sound of the ‘y’ is formed I know I’m over with and done, I scorn The people that force me into days of agony ahead And I'm required to wonder just, “why?” in the midst of the dread I can skate by with a decent essay if you give me a week A week’s worth of planning, scramming, and cramming Just to say, “Good enough!” and hand in The bones of an essay maybe just good enough to get an ‘A’ And then, we call it a day Until the teacher picks apart the mediocre essay there She may not realize something, or she just doesn’t care But poetry is brewed into my essay Snuck into the stew She’ll find rhyme, chiasmus, and style, mixing old with new Because writing poetry is easy for me Essays for me are hell Because essays can’t house my complex thoughts in a shell Poetry allows me room to create Room to be me, room to ruminate Essays are strict and rigid and technique is developed with time But poetry can flow, and then it is mine And sometimes I’m jealous of the people that pull their essays out of a hat Out of their garden, or barred in their pardon Because mine come with time, with try, and with rhyme But mine also come with tone, casual diction, and “that was maybe better than fine” Because poetry is easy For a girl with big thoughts But essays aren’t easy My brain fills with rocks
